Renée Jacobs is an erudite Nude photographer. Renée was asked to provide images in the following three disciplines: Architecture, Portrait and Early Photography Process.
"For me, the nude photography that I do is all about repression. Specifically, female repression. Even more specifically, turning that repression into empowerment. There is such push back today (and always has been) against women claiming the power of their sexuality.
This is nowhere more apparent in the history of the female nude in art. Men (mostly) make the art; men (mostly) consume the art; men (mostly) profit from the art; men (mostly) decide what women "are" art. Indeed, most of the collectors of my work are men who expressly tell me they're struggling to break through the old myths. I'm thankful that the people participating in my work--models, publishers, collectors, etc--have a striking commitment to giving women a voice in the depiction--their depiction-- of female sexuality. An incredibly important part of my work is listening to the model and taking photographs that take her where she wants to go. Something desired but unexplored. Something she's yearning to say. Something she's yearning to show. Something she wants others to see. It's a tremendous gift that I've been given by women all around the globe. I started as a photojournalist a long time ago and I think nude photography for me still has an element of that. At least I hope it does."
